Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
