The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
